Sechelt Library offers numerous options for individuals unable to read conventional print due to a physical, visual, or learning disability.

Accessibility Plan

Website Preferences Tool — visitors to the Library website can change the look of the page presentation according to their reading preferences and needs. These changes can help someone with vision challenges to improve their reading experience. Find out more about the Website Preferences Tool you can use on the Library’s website.

Audiobook Collection The library has an extensive collection of over 1,000 audio-books in CD & MP3 formats. Covers include Title & Author in braille to enable independent browsing by braille users.
Daisy Disc Collection. Daisy discs are advanced MP3 discs with special navigation features. Some include both text and audio, allowing for full-text searching & page navigation. Sechelt Library has a rotating collection of 100 titles available for loan. DAISY compatible player recommended.
Large Print Collection Over 2,000 titles with easy-to-read font size 14 point or larger.
Interlibrary Loans Many materials are shared among libraries in BC and across Canada.
Library2Go Stream or download eBooks, Audiobooks and Magazines using the free Libby App.
Tumblebooks Library Online collection of animated, talking picture books. Professionally narrated with highlighted text.
Wonderbooks. Children’s print books with pre-loaded audio content bound into the cover.
Pre-loaded Kobo eReaders Try one of our 6 themed collections. Adjustable font, text size, colour, contrast and back lighting may appeal to large print readers. A lightweight and portable alternative to regular print books. Select Kobos feature audiobooks.
Braille and PrintBraille. A small children’s collection.

Canada’s largest collection (over 1 million items) of accessible format books and online resources for all ages. Includes newspapers, magazines, and books in audio, e-text and braille. Download books or receive home delivery by mail.
CELA Registration for Canadian Collection: Self-register online

CELA members can access a US based collection (through Bookshare) of over 800,000 titles in e-book and e-braille. Includes books for all ages, covering a range of topics. Audiobooks are in synthetic speech (computer voiced). Note: Proof of disability is required.

National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS) is an online collection of downloadable ebooks and audiobooks for library members with print disabilities.

NNELS provides a collection of content in alternative formats for readers in Canada with print disabilities. NNELS users can request books to be made available through its services!
Alternative various accessible formats, includes: EPUB, DAISY202, and BRF (Braille Ready Format).
Tutorials on various reading systems are available, which includes help where there are known accessiblity issues, to ensure readers can “workaround” the issue and continue reading.

Accessing the NNELS collection

NNELS is available for Canadian public library patrons with print disabilities, or to anyone caring for or living with a person who has a print disability. Registration is required to access the NNELS catalogue.
1. Register with your local library, or email NNELS at support@nnels.ca for more information.
2. Once registered, you can download titles directly to your computer or device. Library staff can also help you with downloading or burning to a disk.
3. Requests can be made for adding new titles and also specific formats. Use our Request a Title form on our website, or send an email to NNELS at support@nnels.ca.

Daisy Audio Players. 6 DAISY players available for loan (Plextalk Linio & Victor Reader Stratus). These compact, simple to use devices feature tactile, high-contrast keys, as well as high quality speech and adjustable volume controls and playback speed. Basic navigation features allow you to skip from section to section or page to page. Ability to play DAISY and MP3 books, as well as music on CDs, and USB flash drives. Available to borrow for 6 weeks, with option to renew.
Envoy Connect Audio Player. Portable digital audio player.
Radio /Cassette/CD boombox. Plays audio and MP3 CD.
Large print computer keyboards. High contrast keys. In-house use.
Handheld video magnifier. Magnifies up to 14x with 5-inch screen. Fast reading with no blur.
Basic handheld magnifier. Available from the front desk.

Microsoft Windows 11 Library public computers have Windows accessibility features, including screen magnification, narration and more.
Open Dyslexic Font available on Library public computers. Letters have heavy weighted bottoms, increasing readability for readers with dyslexia.
